CPAP.com, a family-owned business established in 1999, has grown into a leading global online retailer of CPAP equipment and accessories, serving over two million sleep apnea customers.

cpap.com recognized the need to migrate from its legacy eCommerce platform to overcome system limitations and drive greater efficiency and growth. The company’s existing platform lacked flexibility for third-party integrations, burdened them with manual, error-prone prescription validation, and struggled to manage their complex product catalog.
To solve these challenges, cpap.com required a new solution complete with scalability through flexible integrations, automated prescription processing via advanced machine learning, and sophisticated product management to handle complex variants and compliance. Additionally, the new solution needed to include seamless SEO migration to ensure existing search engine rankings and traffic are maintained.

Recognizing cpap.com’s strong emphasis on SEO and the vast scale of their product catalog, we conducted a detailed SEO migration to preserve their established rankings. This involved carefully managing a high volume of products and SKUs.
We also addressed cpap.com’s complex product requirements inherent to their business, including intricate variant handling, detailed metafield content, and critical prescription requirements, ensuring a comprehensive and compliant solution.

Throughout the project, we continuously addressed complex challenges, such as OCR accuracy and model training techniques, in a timely manner and were dedicated to creating the best possible solution. The successful migration to Shopify enables cpap.com to present a reimagined brand identity and an enhanced user experience. Intuitive navigation and personalized product recommendations empower customers to efficiently locate and purchase products.
The deployment of the intelligent prescription processing solution is a key achievement for our team. We architected a first-of-its-kind system, leveraging generative AI to significantly improve processes for both internal and external users. The solution establishes a new benchmark for document processing within the healthcare eCommerce sector, and cpap.com now has a robust, future-proof platform, strategically positioning them for sustained success.

AI-powered prescription processing

One of the most innovative aspects of the project was the development of a scalable, AI-driven prescription validation system. cpap.com’s previous manual review process was time-consuming and error-prone, so Codal partnered with AWS to create an automated, intelligent solution.
Our approach combined AWS Textract for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) extraction with AWS Bedrock, a platform that allows businesses to build and scale AI applications using large language models. Within Bedrock, we leveraged Anthropic Claude, an advanced natural language processing (NLP) model to intelligently interpret and validate prescription data. This hybrid AI solution dramatically improved prescription processing, reducing the need for manual intervention and accelerating order fulfillment.
Key features of the system include:
  • Intelligent data extraction: AI-enhanced OCR improves accuracy when reading structured and unstructured prescription data, including handwritten forms.
  • Automated validation and processing: The system evaluates extracted metadata, applies complex logic sets, and determines prescription validity without human intervention.
  • Order automation and CSR support: If a prescription is valid, the system automatically processes the order; if further review is required, it alerts a customer service representative.
The backend prescription processing system was exceptionally complex, requiring a significant effort to map out various user flows and expected outcomes for prescriptions and orders. This included the meticulous management of 99 metafields, ensuring a robust and efficient system.
