The Magento 1 End of Life is Coming. What Does it Mean for Your Business?

THE COUNTDOWN TO THE MAGENTO 1 END OF LIFE IS ON. ARE YOU PREPARED?

Back in 2018, Magento announced that it would no longer support updates to its Magento 1 eCommerce software, setting its end of life (EOL) for June 30, 2020. While eCommerce sites currently running on Magento 1 will not shut down after that date, the lack of support will have a significant impact on how your company does business online. Magento 2 is built on a completely different architecture, so upgrading isn’t so simple. And seeking out a new eCommerce provider will mean a full replatforming of your online store, something that is no small feat.

The deadline is fast approaching, but you’re not out of time just yet. If you haven’t committed to a strategy for migrating off of Magento 1, you have some decisions to make. While your online store won’t disappear after June 30, it’s important to educate yourself on the risks of operating on an unsupported eCommerce platform, and consider how an accelerated migration or replatforming may help your business in the long run.

RISK #1: SECURITY

Security should be the number one priority of maintaining a successful eCommerce site. Following the Magento 1 EOL, Magento will no longer be producing security patches, meaning your site will not maintain up-to-date security standards. This will result in immense vulnerabilities and put both your data and your customers’ data at risk. Continuing to run on Magento 1 means your business is exposing itself to significant—and unnecessary—risk.

RISK #2: LACK OF DEVELOPER SUPPORT

No official updates to Magento 1 will come directly from the provider, so implementing things like security patches will require the work of an outside developer. This is a costly and time-consuming approach compared to simply implementing a Magento-supported update. As more and more businesses transition off of the outdated platform, developers that can provide Magento 1 services will be harder to find.

RISK #3: EXTENSIONS AND INTEGRATIONS

Many of the third-party extensions and integrations your eCommerce site depends on could soon cease to function on Magento 1. Due to the lack of updates coming from Magento, you could see these business-critical tools just suddenly stop working.

RISK #4: PAYMENTS

Continuing to run on Magento 1 will mean your site will no longer comply with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). If you use a third-party payment processor like Stripe or Adyen, this spells trouble. Payment providers do not want to support a site that is not PCI DSS-compliant as it puts cardholder data at risk and increases the potential for fraud. By continuing to run on Magento 1 following its EOL, you could be looking at losing your payment provider—or worse, a major breach of customer payment data.

RAPID REPLATFORMING

It’s clear that the risks tied to continuing to run on Magento 1 after June 30 outweigh the costs of replatforming. But while upgrading to Magento 2 or replatforming with a new eCommerce provider may seem like a heavy lift, it doesn’t have to be the headache-inducing process you may be envisioning.
